Deer Park is popularly known as the birthplace of Texas for it was here that Texas won independence from Mexico on April 21st 1836, at the Battle of San Jacinto. After retreats and disasters halfway across Texas, Sam Houston's small army turned on Mexican General Santa Anna's superior forces and defeated them.

The city of Deer Park founded in 1892 by Simeon West, was named for abundance of deer in the area. A railroad station was established in 1892 and the post office was established in 1893.

This sleepy town has grown from a tiny population of 100 in 1940, to a slightly larger 736 in 1950 to 12,773 in 1970 and the now moderate size of a quickly approaching 30,000 mark in present day. This increase is largely due to the establishment of industry along the Houston Ship Channel.
