Since 1988, members of the American Chemistry Council have significantly improved their environmental, health, safety and security performance through the Responsible Care initiative. Responsible Care is a global chemical industry performance initiative that is implemented in the United States through the American Chemistry Council. Participation in Responsible Care is mandatory for ACC member companies.
Responsible Care helps America's leading chemical companies go above and beyond government requirements and openly communicate their results to the public.
Responsible Care is more than a set of principles and declarations. It is implementing world-class management systems, verified through independent auditors; tracking performance through established environment, health, safety and security measures; and extending these best practices to business partners through the industry supply chain. In the U.S., Responsible Care has resulted in reduced emissions by 75 percent and an employee safety record that is f our and a half times better than the average of the U.S. manufacturing sector.
As part of their commitment to Responsible Care, all ACC members have made CEO-level commitments to uphold these program elements:
ACC members work with their customers and suppliers to extend the ethic of Responsible Care to other companies that play a role in the business of chemistry supply chain. As such, many chemical transporters, distributors, warehouses, and suppliers also fully practice Responsible Care through ACC's Responsible Care Partnership Program.
Reporting of performance is fundamental to Responsible Care. It enables companies to track their own performance over time, track their performance against peer groups, and communicate to stakeholders how the industry has improved and continues to improve.
Through Responsible Care, ACC member companies make available more performance information than any other private sector group at http://www.responsiblecare-us.com.
Most recent data demonstrate that Responsible Care companies have:
